This painting is unique and original and was painted entirely by me. The hull form is based on a black and white sketch by Wm. Van de Velde, and the sail form, rigging and background detail were composed by me.

The Happy Return of 1654.

Launched in 1654 as the Winsby, and named after a battle in the 2nd English Civil war in which the Commonwealth were the victors. She was renamed the Happy Return in 1660 and was present at the Battle of Santa Cruz (April 1657), Battle of Lowestoft (June 1665), Battle of Vagan (August 1665), the Four Days Battle (June 1666), the St James Day Battle (July 1666), the 1st Battle of Schveningen (May 1673), the 2nd Battle of Schveningen (June 1673) and the Battle of Texel (August 1673). In 1691 she was captured by the French.
